EYELID REDUCTION
Medical term “Blepharoplasty” is a drooping of the eyelids and puffy bags that form below your eyes and make you look tired, angry or sad. Removal of excess skin and fatty tissue is safe and straight forward procedure which can make impressive change. It cannot remove crow’s feet or eliminate dark circles under the eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows. Most patients are 35 or older. But if a feature like baggy eyelids runs in your family, you may act when younger.
What is involved?
Eyelid reduction or blepharoplasty usually takes between one hour to hour and half. Surgeon will make incision along natural lines in the creases of your upper eyelids and just below the lashes in the lower ones. Working through the incisions, the surgeon will separates the skin from the subcutaneous layers, then remove excess fat and trims sagging skin and muscle. Very fine sutures are used to close the incision. If you only need pocket of fat removed from beneath your lower eyelids, surgeon may perform an incision inside your lower eyelid, so that no scar is visible on the eyelid. This procedure is called transconjunctival blepharoplasty.

What happens after the surgery?
After the surgery it is best to keep your head elevated for few days. Eye pad and bandages will be applied fro 24 hours. Cold compression can also help to reduce swelling and bruising. Surgeon will normally applied steri-strips to the sutures and support eyelids after surgery and if these become crusted they can be replaced. Cleaning the eyes with water or normal saline with the use of cotton wool buds is useful and surgeon may advise the use of eye drops or ointment 24 to 72 hours after the surgery. The sutures are usually removed after 3 to 5 days and soon after you can be able to use make up. Sometimes you will be advised to use the suture steri-strips as support to the lower eyelids for a week or so. After the surgery eyes may appear tighter and watery because of the tear ducts swollen and water does not drain as readily. This will last few weeks. The scars will look pink for few months but eventually they become almost invisible.
When can I return to work?
After the surgery most people will return to work after a week or ten days.
